Prison/Homeless Ministry

"I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me." - Jesus.  Matthew 25:36

Washington First United Methodist Church has a long history of ministering to prisoners and the homeless.  We conduct Bible study programs, present music programs, and participate in gatherings with prisoners and their families.  Perhaps most important, we listen.  It is a blessing to see how God's grace works in the lives of these men and women.  It is our hope that many of the prisoners with whom we work will incorporate the love of Christ into their lives throughout their imprisonment and, perhaps more critically, upon their release, which is when they will need God's support most of all.

Background:  In the spring of 2008, we began teaching the Bible study, Experiencing God, at the local state prison, Wilkes County Pre-Release Center.  After leading the first group, a second group was established for men who had completed Experiencing God. The second group studied Highway to Heaven, a continuing discipleship program for the inmates who had completed Experiencing God. When the Pre-Release Center closed in 2011, the same group of volunteers began ministering at the Augusta Rescue Mission.
AUGUSTA RESCUE MISSION, Augusta, GA
Since 1965, the Augusta Rescue Mission has had a tireless commitment to breaking the cycle of homelessness. By creating a safe and healing environment for homeless men—more than just a shelter and soup kitchen—the Mission offers the means for men’s lives to change, arming them with the understanding and wisdom for sound decision-making, as well as life skills.
