Children's Sunday School Youth Sunday School
Adult Sunday School

Sunday School meets every week from 10:00 – 11:00 AM.  There are classes for all ages.  Please take a few moments to read about the various classes, choose the ones that fit you and the members of your family and then please come!

Baby's Classes (? months to 2 yrs)

Baby's aren't overlooked here at Washington First UMC.  We know how important your baby is to you and make sure that your baby is provided with a safe, clean, carefully supervised place to play and discover his/her world while you are in classes and worshiping God.  Just in case we have a concern and need your assistance, we provide beepers (like restaurant ones) whose primary purpose is to connect us with you and put your heart and mind at peace assured that your baby is receiving excellent care from loving, experienced nursery workers.

Toddler Classes - (aged 2-3 years)

Toddlers are provided a large room where they can stand up and walk and play.  There are many educational toys and low tables and chairs just the right size.  Our teachers, Robbie and Jessica Eubank, plan lessons and work with the children to encourage them to blossom and grow in a loving, caring atmosphere.

Children's Classes-

 “God's Marketplace”

A Rotational Learning Format for
4 year olds – 5th Graders

In the “Rotational Learning” Format:

  • The same Bible story or Bible theme is taught for a month.

  • The first and fourth weeks we offer special activities for children that involve music and games. The second and third weeks, the children are divided into two groups that rotate into two different workshops – so at the end of the month, each group has experienced all four activities.

  • Each activity has the same theme but a different focus which allows the learners to experience the same Bible story in  different ways.  Workshops include:

  • 1st Sundays: The Bible story for the month is introduced, the children are taught the monthly memory verse and the children enjoy a group activity or craft.

  • 2nd Sundays: The Carpenter's Workshop - Arts and Crafts

  • 3rd Sundays: The Daily Bread Café - Cooking (AND EATING) Food

  • 4th Sundays: Music Games Team or the Drama Team

  • 5th Sundays:  On these quarterly Sundays the children enjoy special activities!

  • A staff of adult leaders is recruited for each monthly rotation – so adults do not have to miss too much of their own Sunday School Classes.

Youth Classes

Middle School students, grades 6th and 7th, participate in Confirmation Class every two years.  This year we have a Confirmation Class that has ten students.  This fall they had guest speakers: Skeet Willingham, who introduced them to former saints who lived and served here at Washington FUMC and Becky Hooten, who introduced them to the dynamic ministry of witnessing about God's great love that can only be received through Jesus Christ our Savior.  In late October they went on a Retreat to St. Simons Island. This class hopes to provide insights into what it really means to be a Christian, how other Christians famous and not-so-famous live their beliefs and how we can live our belief in Jesus Christ. We use the Bible and encourage scripture memorization.  Gale Seibert and Tony and Kelly Powell are the teachers.

Middle School students, 7th and 8th grade, we have Beyond Confirmation Class.  This exciting class taught by Janie Cravens examines the Bible from lots of creative perspectives.  These students have a great time increasing their Biblical knowledge. Miss Janie has planned a retreat for this class after Christmas in which they'll experience some special wonders of God's creation!

Senior High students meet for lively discussions about living Christianity every Sunday in the classroom across from the choir room. Sometimes they watch a video or spend time sharing stories. If you are in high school or recently started college, you are invited to be a part of this class. Ed and Susan Pope are the teachers and we appreciate their faithfulness and creativity.

Adult Classes

Shepherds Class- This brand new adult class invites young adult parents to come and learn about parenting.  They meet in Bell Cottage. To find this class please go in the front door and their class is in the front living room.  They plan to enjoy dinners together, to develop caring relationships with each other and hope to become better parents.

Seekers Class – This class includes young to middle-aged couples and singles and is taught by a number of class members.  Seekers employ a discussion class format and use a variety of study materials.  They enjoy reaching out into our community with hands-on ministries.  Recently they sponsored a free car wash and water and soft drink give-away.  Why?  To share God's love with everyone in a tangible way.  This class meets on Sundays in the Fellowship Hall.  This fall they are studying Beth Moore's study of the Book of Daniel

Faithful Messengers – This class includes middle-age couples and singles.  Many of the class members take turns teaching the Cokesbury Adult Bible Studies Series. They teach according to a discussion format and study many topics.  They enjoy sponsoring events for the church.  Last year they sponsored a huge yard sale that benefited not only our building campaign, but everyone!  This class meets on the second floor of the educational building.

Willing Workers – This class includes senior women and men and is taught by Shari Bryson.  The class uses the Cokesbury Adult Bible Studies Series.  It meets on the second floor of the educational building across the hall from the Faithful Messengers.  The Willing Workers enjoy traveling together;  there are new friends waiting to meet you in this class!

Pharr-Ficklen – This class is made up of senior men in the church and is taught by Olin Newby.  Pressley Blakeley is their substitute teacher. They used the Cokesbury Adult Bible Studies series.  Belle Guin accompanies their hymn singing.  It meets on the bottom floor under the sanctuary next to our Pre-Kindergarten Classroom.  All Senior men are invited to come and enjoy this class.

So you see, we really do offer a variety of Sunday School Classes that offer sound teaching about what it means to be a Christian and how to live so that you fulfill Jesus' commandments to love God with all of your heart, mind, soul and strength and to love your neighbor as yourself.  In addition, when you come to Sunday School you will meet and make Christian friends who love and care about you.
